2017 Kia Sportage redesign
The 2017 Kia Sportage challenged the classic adage, “if it’s not broken don't fix it.” While the 2016 model is a strong contender in a saturated compact crossover market, the 2017 upgrades make this vehicle tough to compete with. With more cargo space, better fuel efficiency and enhanced safety, not to mention an eye-catching makeover, the 2017 Sportage made leaps of improvements this generation.
The 2017 Sportage emerges with a stronger and lighter frame. Kia employed three times more high-strength steel to improve crash-test durability. This stronger body is also larger; the new version of the crossover gained 18 percent more cargo space behind the second row, and the floor can be lowered to gain more vertical space if needed. There is also a marginal improvement in headroom of .2 inches, and it’s 1.6 inches longer than the older Sportage.
The redesigned crossover boasts huge improvements to overall safety. Thinner underpinning pillars, a larger rear glass hatch, and repositioned mirrors that sit lower on the doors guarantee improved visibility. More enhanced safety features include a lane-departure warning, forward collision alert, and an autonomous emergency braking system.
It’s difficult to talk about the 2017 Sportage without addressing its new look. The front of the vehicle sees the most noticeable changes with sweeping headlights that sit higher on the hood and extend back into the fenders. The famous Tiger Grille sits lower than on the 2016 model and is framed by pronounced driving lights on either side. The crossover exudes a more aggressive stance with its dramatic slope across the front end, and daringly bold features. From the back, it retains the classic Sportage look but with modern polished details. The sleek interior is upgraded with premium materials for a more high-end experience. The new model also offers a wider panoramic sunroof for your cruising enjoyment.
The new ride is also quieter than the previous generation. Kia upgraded additional sound-absorbent materials and a stronger glass seal for the sunroof. They also added more noise reduction materials to the wheel wells. The upgraded suspension system reduces harshness and vibrations so you feel fewer bumps on the road. These improvements enhance the overall driving experience and make it feel more luxurious.
Kia aims to gain more fuel efficiency by slightly lowering the outputs on both engines. The previously mentioned lighter frame lends marginal benefits to increased fuel economy as well.
Entertainment takes a step forward with a larger touchscreen for the navigation and the infotainment system. Finally, the 2017 Kia Sportage offers two separate audio systems to choose from. There is the basic 6-speaker 160-watt system to provide a high-quality listening experience, but for those who want to upgrade there is an optional 8-speaker 320-watt Harmon Kardon premium audio system that was not offered with the 2016 model. This redesign also comes with features that enhance convenience, such as a new optional power liftgate that automatically opens when the key fob comes within three feet of the vehicle.
The 2017 Kia Sportage maintained all of the aspects owners of the previous generation love such as a sporty appearance and unintimidating price-point, while increasing safety, boasting higher-end features, and improving cargo and passenger space. The more assertive appearance accurately describes the way the 2017 Sportage entered the market; as a strong presence that’s difficult to ignore.
